The following word problem is for practicing the application of weight conversions.

Example 1:


How many pounds are in 2.5 tons?

To solve this problem, use the value of weight given in the problem in place of the matching value in the conversion factor, solve the problem to get the solution in terms required by the problem.

Conversion factors: pounds × 2000 = tons
                              tons ÷ 2000 = pounds

2.5 × 2000 = pounds
2.5 × 2000 = 5000

There are 5,000 pounds in 2.5 tons.
