The following word problem is for practicing the application of measurements of ordinary shaped objects.

Example 3:

What is the volume of a cylinder with a diameter of 16 feet and a height of 12 feet?

To find the volume of a cylinder use the pi times the radius squared formula to find the area for the circle that is the base for the cylinder. Next, multiply that area by the height of the cylinder. Remember, when the radius is not given, it is best to solve for it first before using the equation to determine the area of the circle.

16 ÷ 2 = the radius of the circle
16 ÷ 2 = 8
3.14 × 82 = the area of the base of the cylinder
3.14 × 82 = 201
201 × 12 = the volume of the cylinder
201 × 12 = 2412

The volume for the cylinder is 2,412 cubic feet.
