The following word problem is for practicing the application of mass conversions.

Example 2:


How many kilograms are in 12 metric tons?

To solve this problem, use the term of mass that is given in the problem in the matching term in the conversion factor. Solve the equation in order to get the answer in terms required by the problem.

Conversion factors: metric tons × 1000 = kilograms
                              kilograms ÷ 1000 = metric tons

 

12 × 1000 = kilograms
12 × 1000 = 12000

There are 12,000 kilograms in 12 metric tons.
