The following word problem is for practicing the application of english area conversions.

Example 2:


How many square yards are in 36 square feet?

To solve this problem, use the conversion factor by replacing the given units of measure in the problem with the matching units of measure in the conversion factor and work the problem through to get the solution in terms of units of area required by the problem.

Conversion factor: square feet ÷ 9 = square yards
                                      square yards × 9 = square feet

                    

36 ÷ 9 = square yards
36 ÷ 9 = 4

There are 4 square yards in 36 square feet.
