Mixing

One of the requirements for a chemical reaction is thorough mixing.  Thorough mixing is really another way of saying that the reactive components must be very close together in order to react. 

Mixing a solution of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid brings individual particles of each type together so that they can turn into salt and water.  If the components are not mixed well, then less product will be formed.
